Details:
Professor William C. Thompson gave a special presentation, titled “Evidence, Inference, and Bias in Forensic Science.” This presentation displayed his current research on ways in which forensic scientists draw conclusions from scientific data during investigations of crime and terrorism and on how they communicate those conclusions to decision makers (juries and national security officials). Additionally, Professor Thompson discussed some of his ongoing research on what lay people make of forensic science evidence when it is presented in various ways. The research is designed to identify sources of error and bias in the interpretation of forensic science evidence and to identify ways to improve communication and understanding of that evidence in criminal and national security investigations.
